Jeff Blake, Sony’s worldwide marketing and distribution chairman, said: “Michael Jackson has an army of fans everywhere around the world. By rolling out this film simultaneously worldwide, we are giving audiences an incredible opportunity to join together in celebration of Michael Jackson’s incredible career.”

Following the premieres, which will also take place in New York, Rio De Janeiro, Berlin, Johannesburg and Seoul among others, the film will open to the public for a two-week run the day after the premieres. Other events for the movie will also be held in Tokyo, Moscow, Sydney and Paris but are expected to be held at a later time than the concurrent premieres.

Tickets for This Is It go on sale on September 27.

Girltalk 24/7:  What do you guys think about all these money hungry ideas in place supposedly to “celebrate” MJ’s career?  With this documentary and a reality show on its way, do you think the intentions behind these new tv/film ventures are honestly good?

tdk

Tamia, Deborah Cox and Kelly Price are coming together for an upcoming compilation album called ‘The Queen Project. The new formed trio talked about the new project along with the reality series that will document the process:

Kelly Price says:

“Truly I am excited because what we’re doing has never been done before with three women on CD,” Price told BV Buzz. “Each of us in our own right is a true vocalist and while I am loving what we’re doing in the studio, I just can’t wait for people to see our live show!”

Deborah Cox also commented:

I fee the same way. It’s really the most exciting project I’ve been a part of. We’re going to be raising the bar just a tad. It’s great to work with likeminded individuals. We have the same sentiments as singers, mothers and wives!”

Tamia added:

“I’m so excited to work with these ladies because I’m a fan first, It is fun and we have a really good time together. There’s something special here musically and we have a genuine bond.”

The trio will be performing in NYC at the Circle of Sisters Expo on October 10th.  Their CD is slated to drop sometime in 2010.

Prediction Software Wins $1 Mil. Prize from Netflix

netflix-logo

Netflix Inc. awarded a $1 million prize Monday to a seven-member international research group as part of a three-year, intensely waged contest to help the online movie rental company predict more accurately what movies its customers will like.

What Netflix gained from the experience is likely worth more than $1 million, and the company’s launch of a second $1 million contest shows it is well aware of that.

By identifying ways that Netflix could improve its movie recommendations by at least 10 percent, the winning BellKor’s Pragmatic Chaos team is actually letting Netflix make picks that are twice as good as they are now.

Netflix’s recommendation system is the software version of the video store clerk who’s a movie buff, except the Netflix computer knows your personal tastes and doesn’t pass judgment if “Runaway Bride” is your top pick.

Loved “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”? How about “Clerks”? If you rated both flicks at least four out of five stars, Netflix’s system will likely suggest “Shaun of the Dead,” a British zombie comedy from 2004. It is in Netflix’s best interest that you like it — after all, no one keeps going back for movies they hate.

But Netflix sometimes recommends duds, and incorporating BellKor’s improvements will reduce the chances of that happening and double Netflix’s chances of giving you the right pick.

The Netflix Prize contest was a close call. BellKor’s Pragmatic Chaos and a rival group called the Ensemble each showed a 10.06 percent improvement in movie picks over Netflix’s own Cinematch system.

Girltalk 24/7:  That is so awesome that a team of researchers won $1M for creating a recommendation system for Netflix.  I agree with the writer, Barbara Ortutay, that the benefits from the recommendation system is far beyond the $1M rewarded to Bellkor Pragmatic Chaos.  I think more companies should join this business idea, it would definitely provide a personal touch for customers using a company’s products/services. Everyone loves personalization, right?

Obama is Re-evaluating Afghanistan War Strategy

49401055

For weeks, military officials have been laying the groundwork to request additional troops. Army Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top U.S. and allied commander in Afghanistan, warned in a classified assessment that the Afghan mission risked failure if more troops were not sent. A declassified version of McChrystal’s assessment became public after it was leaked to the Washington Post website this week.

In part, the shift in the White House stance came after Obama ordered 21,000 additional U.S. troops to help with last month’s Afghan national election, a ballot widely seen as fraudulent. But the debate goes deeper than troop levels.

Obama has questioned whether McChrystal’s broad counterinsurgency strategy — combating corruption, improving government and economic development — is worth committing the extra troops it requires.

Appearing on CNN on Sunday, Obama asked, “Are we pursuing the right strategy?” On NBC, he said he would expand the counterinsurgency effort only if it contributed to the goal of defeating Al Qaeda.

“I’m not interested in just being in Afghanistan for the sake of being in Afghanistan . . . or sending a message that America is here for the duration,” Obama said.

After Obama approved the strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan in March, military officials moved to implement a counterinsurgency approach. At the same time, Pentagon officials replaced the former top Afghanistan commander, Gen. David D. McKiernan, with McChrystal.

McChrystal had led special operations forces against Al Qaeda leaders in Iraq and Afghanistan. But he quickly outlined a strategy to expand efforts to protect the Afghan people from the Taliban and other insurgent groups.

“He, of all our military leaders, understands the Al Qaeda threat,” said a former military official who has advised the Obama administration on Afghan policy. “When he comes back with a broad-based, counterinsurgency mission, it is extraordinarily credible.”

It is not yet clear how many more troops McChrystal’s strategy would require.

But several top administration officials have harbored doubts about the wisdom of a stepped-up counterinsurgency plan.
