Airline Bag Fees for International Flights (I know, this sucks!)

(USA Today) The big U.S. airlines are charging baggage fees on some international flights, generally coach tickets between Europe and the U.S. or Canada. What you should know:

luggage

American Airlines: $50 to check a second bag for tickets purchased beginning Sept. 14 on flights to, through, or from India, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.

Continental Airlines: $50 to check a second bag to or from Europe, beginning with tickets purchased Aug. 27. Continental also charges $25 to check a second bag between the U.S. and Mexico and Central and South America, except Brazil.

Delta Air Lines: $50 for flights to Europe. Delta is also charging $30 to check a second bag for flights to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America except Brazil. That charge began with tickets purchased Sept. 19 for travel beginning Oct. 13.

United Airlines: $50 for flights from North America to Europe or India, and 35 euros from most European airports for the trip to the U.S. The charge is 31 pounds for flights from the U.K. United also charges $27 for a second bag from the U.S. or Canada to Mexico or the Caribbean.

US Airways: $55 to check a second bag between the U.S. and all trans-Atlantic destinations beginning with tickets bought Aug. 26 for travel starting Nov. 4.

Note: Prices are for checking a bag at the airport. US Airways, Continental and United all charge $5 less if you pay your baggage charge online instead of at the airport. An exception is Continental’s $25 fee for a second bag to Latin America, which is the same no matter where you pay.

The airlines have several exemptions from the fees, generally including high-level frequent fliers, full-fare coach passengers and active military personnel.

Girltalk 24/7:  Do you think airlines will keep this fee in place even when the economy does an upturn and changes for the better?  I really hope not.  Jeez, Southwest is the way to go right now if the departure/destination is available!

I Can’t Believe Beyonce Was Acting Like That!!

beyonce

Beyonce reportedly had Lindsay Lohan thrown out of her own dressing room because the singer decided it should be hers. Bey was performing at the F1 Rocks concert in Singapore over the weekend and had ordered her people to secure her the largest dressing room backstage.

However, Lindsay, who was hosting the event for British TV network Channel 4, had already claimed the room for herself as she arrived first and was pretty upset when she was told she would have to vacate it. The Mean Girls actress told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper: “I’ve been a bit down. It was a strange night. Everyone was being aggressive and bothering me. I really didn’t like it.”

In the lead up to her performance, Beyonce made her support acts sweat as she wouldn’t allow them to use her air conditioning. Although temperatures backstage approached 90 degrees and people were passing out, Beyonce’s entourage refused to switch on her personal air cooling fans as they were just for her.

British DJ Seb Fontaine, who suffered heatstroke, told Britain’s Daily Star newspaper:

We were told, ’No they are Beyonce’s fans.’ I wasn’t asking to play her drum kit on stage. I just wanted to keep cool.

Also, in her 139-page contract, Beyonce also demanded 6 beauty chambers, fitness equipment, an authentic fruit platter and tea and honey. Other acts to perform at the event included Black Eyed Peas and Gwen Stefani.

That is NOT A GOOD LOOK Bey, she seemed to be level-headed and not let the fame get to her thus far.  But maybe that’s just what we see.

Uh-Oh! Bad Kharma for Kim Zolciak, aka, the well known “Habitual Liar” (What a Mess!)

Kim Zolciak, aka, Habitual Liar

Kim Zolciak, aka, Habitual Liar

Kim Zolciak’s now ex publicist/manager Jonathan Jaxson (mentioned in the episode where Sheree pulled her hair) took it to radio to air her dirty laundry on the RHOA star. Recently, Jaxson appeared in studio with B98.5 FM’s Steve McCoy and Vikki Locke to announce that he’s resigned as Zolciak’s manager and publicist because “she’s a habitual liar.”

Aren’t we hearing that phrase attached to Kim’s name, a little too often??

Jaxon says that Kim lied about her past as a stripper and that she indeed danced at a strip club called The Cheetah. He also says that his former client spends “up to $200,000 a month.” He also previewed that viewers will see Zolciak’s married beau “Big Poppa” when he turns up in one of the second season’s remaining episodes with a large carat diamond for Zolciak. Oops, Sorry for the spoiler!

Jaxson also claimed that Bravo will be filming the second season’s reunion special Oct 7 and 8 here in Atlanta.

The drama doesn’t stop here, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively that she is being sued by her music producer, causing her to take her song Tardy for the Party off of iTunes on Monday afternoon.

“This producer Don Vito is suing her for not paying him so she doesn’t have the rights,” a source says. Her official website is also down, “possibly for similar reason”, the source continued.

Believe it or not, the song had landed on the Top 10 iTunes Dance Chart.

OMG … I actually missed the episode where Sheree pulled Kim’s hair the week that it aired and JUST saw the re-run last night.  Kim was soooooo adimant that she was NOT lying about all the things Nene and Sheree were accusing her of.  She said that she goes to sleep loving herself every night BECAUSE she’s not a liar.  Kim also repeatedly swore on her kids’ lives that she was NOT lying about anything … ok, damn. I wanted to believe her when she said all that, but it seems as though everyone who associates with her, ends up calling her a habitual liar/pathological liar.  Now that’s f’ed up, it’s pretty obvious she’s a shady character.  Jeez, so how the hell is her whack ass getting all this financial assistance from Big Poppa? He’s an idiot!

Tone While You WAIT (What a Great Way to be EFFICIENT)

women-toned-upper-body2

Like everyone else, I hate waiting, especially in long lines.  I read an article in Self Magazine recently that showed you how to firm up using stealth exercises while you find yourself waiting.

1.  Sitting

Contracting your core, roll shoulders back and down, so the blades are closer together.  With your arms at 90-degree angle, squeeze them to your sides, as if you were gripping a clutch purse, says Tandy Gutierrez, regional Pilates manager for Equinox Fitness Clubs in Southern California.  Do 15 reps.

  • Benefit:  Look 5 pounds lighter by improving your posture.

2.  Driving

Adjust your seat so your back is straight, engaging core muscles, Gutierrez says.  With your stomach contracted to do six Kegels.  Hold each for three seconds.  Aim to do six sets, resting a minute between each set.  “Kegels strengthen your pelvic floor, the bas of your core,” Gutierrez says.

  • Benefit:  Flatten your lower tummy without doing crunches.

3.  Standing

“When we stand, we tend to favor one side, which can harm our back,” Gutierrez says. Instead, keep your feet under your hips and your weight equally distributed.  Without moving, pretend to rip the floor apart with your soles, tightening your quads, glutes and hamstrings.  Hold for two seconds.  Do 12 reps.

  • Benefit:  sculpt your thighs and ensure your spine feels fine.

Obama Wants to Add More Hours to the School Year

barack-obama-school-speech-090809-lg

(MSNBC) Obama says American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe.

The president, who has a sixth-grader and a third-grader, wants schools to add time to classes, to stay open late and to let kids in on weekends so they have a safe place to go.

“Our school calendar is based upon the agrarian economy and not too many of our kids are working the fields today,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a recent interview with The Associated Press.

‘Level the playing field’

“Young people in other countries are going to school 25, 30 percent longer than our students here,” Duncan told the AP. “I want to just level the playing field.”

While it is true that kids in many other countries have more school days, it’s not true they all spend more time in school.

Kids in the U.S. spend more hours in school (1,146 instructional hours per year) than do kids in the Asian countries that persistently outscore the U.S. on math and science tests — Singapore (903), Taiwan (1,050), Japan (1,005) and Hong Kong (1,013). That is despite the fact that Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong have longer school years (190 to 201 days) than does the United States (180 days).

Strong case

Researcher Tom Loveless of the Brookings Institution looked at math scores in countries that added math instruction time. Scores rose significantly, especially in countries that added minutes to the day, rather than days to the year.

“Ten minutes sounds trivial to a school day, but don’t forget, these math periods in the U.S. average 45 minutes,” Loveless said. “Percentage-wise, that’s a pretty healthy increase.”

Summer is a crucial time for kids, especially poorer kids, because poverty is linked to problems that interfere with learning, such as hunger and less involvement by their parents.

That makes poor children almost totally dependent on their learning experience at school, said Karl Alexander, a sociology professor at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University, home of the National Center for Summer Learning.

Costly

Extra time is not cheap. The Massachusetts program costs an extra $1,300 per student, or 12 percent to 15 percent more than regular per-student spending, said Jennifer Davis, a founder of the program. It received more than $17.5 million from the state Legislature last year.

Aside from improving academic performance, Education Secretary Duncan has a vision of schools as the heart of the community. Duncan, who was Chicago’s schools chief, grew up studying alongside poor kids on the city’s South Side as part of the tutoring program his mother still runs.

“Those hours from 3 o’clock to 7 o’clock are times of high anxiety for parents,” Duncan said. “They want their children safe. Families are working one and two and three jobs now to make ends meet and to keep food on the table.”
