Do You Have Enough?: Why Vitamin D is CRUCIAL to Our Health

I was browsing through the MSNBC website earlier today and found a great article on Vitamin D! I’m always interested in finding ways to improve the health and appearance of body, take a read and learning something new =)

LONDON – Vitamin D is vital in activating human defenses and low levels suffered by around half the world’s population may mean their immune systems’ killer T cells are poor at fighting infection, scientists said.

The findings by Danish researchers could help the fight against infectious diseases and global epidemics, they said Sunday, and could be particularly useful in the search for new vaccines.

The researchers found that immune systems’ killer cells, known as T cells, rely on vitamin D to become active and remain dormant and unaware of the possibility of threat from an infection or pathogen if vitamin D is lacking in the blood.

“When a T cell is exposed to a foreign pathogen, it extends a signaling device or ‘antenna’ known as a vitamin D receptor, with which it searches for vitamin D,” said Carsten Geisler of Copenhagen University’s department of international health, immunology and microbiology, who led the study.

“This means the T cell must have vitamin D or activation of the cell will cease. If the T cells cannot find enough vitamin D in the blood, they won’t even begin to mobilize.”

Most Vitamin D is made by the body as a natural by-product of the skin’s exposure to sunlight. It can also be found in fish liver oil, eggs and fatty fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel, or taken as a supplement.

Still Today, Women Are Earning Less Money Than Men

I thought there were laws in place to ensure that both men and women were compensated equally, somehow, that is not reality. A recent study showed that overall, men make about a quarter more than women. Keep reading below for more details.

(per msnbc) BRUSSELS – Women with children earn almost a third less than men and still face too many career obstacles, a global trade union said in a report released Monday.

The persistent imbalance in household chores can hurt women’s careers, the study of the International Trade Union Confederation concluded. Women with kids earn on average 68 percent of what men make, and overall, women make 74 percent of what men bring in, according to the report.

The report is “a call to action at all levels,” Diana Holland, chair of the ITUC’s Women’s Committee, said in a statement. The publication of the report coincided with the United Nations Day for Women’s Rights.

The study said that women with kids more often work part-time than men or women without children, indicating it is hard to combine careers with the demands of a family.

McDonald’s is Still Going Strong

McDonald’s has been around since I was a baby and it seems to never die down. There are many competitiors, but no other fast food chain can outsell Mc D’s. It amazes me to see how consumers rarely get sick or bored of eating from McDonald’s. Most people have the whole menu memorized and still continue to eat from this addictive fast food chain for years on out. Despite the economy still being sour, McDonald’s has proven that they are the top dog and are not going anywhere any time soon.

(per the Arizona Daily Star) McDonald’s Corp. said Monday that sales at restaurants open at least a year climbed 4.8 percent in February on strong overseas growth and a small rise in U.S. sales.

Results were driven in the U.S. by strong demand for the chain’s breakfast dollar menu, McCafe drinks and a Chicken McNugget promotion centered around the Winter Olympics.

Results in Europe rose 5.4 percent, while Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa’s performance climbed 10.5 percent. McDonald’s, based in Oak Brook, Ill., reported strong performances in France, the U.K., Japan, China and Australia.

Sales at restaurants open at least a year are a key indicator of performance because they measure growth at existing locations rather than newly opened ones.

In January, McDonald’s said that its fourth-quarter profit climbed, helped by its dollar menu. But yearly sales dropped for the first time in at least a quarter century.

Still, McDonald’s did considerably better than nearly all its fast-food competitors, who have been slashing prices _ at the expense of profits _ to get customers in the door as the economy slowly heads toward recovery.
