New Study: Sleep Habits Based on Ethnicity

I’ve been working a ton of hours at my job lately and have been seriously deprived of sleep. It’s hard to go straight to sleep once you get home from work. If I start work at 9 am and get off at 10 pm, I’ll come home and watch tv for about an hour or more and won’t fall asleep until about midnight. Just to wake up and do it all over again the next day. I found an interesting article and study that broke down the statistics among different ethnicities related to sleeping and pre-sleeping habits. Take a read below, is this accurate?

All Americans are struggling to get more snooze time, but a report out Monday shows that race and cultural differences play a role in sleep-related habits.

The National Sleep Foundation released its annual “Sleep in America Poll,” which reveals how much sleep Americans are getting, what their bedtime habits are, and who’s seeing the doctor and taking medications when sleep is elusive.

Does race matter in the bedroom? A new study says it might.

The National Sleep Foundation has just released a study indicating that while some ethnic groups are more likely to get it on at night, others are more likely to get some Z’s, according to a LiveScience report.

Researchers conducted interviews with 1,000 Americans, asking them to categorize themselves as Black, White, Hispanic or Asian.

  • Ten percent of Black and Hispanic participants reported having sex every night within an hour before falling asleep, compared to only 1% of Asians. White participants fell in the middle at 4%.
  • Seventy percent of Blacks said they prayed or took part in some religious ritual before bed. Forty percent of Hispanics do household chores.
  • Fifty percent of Asians spend time on their computer almost every night – twice as much computer time as was reported by any other group. Asians were also the least likely to drink alcohol before bed and the most likely to get a good night’s sleep at least a few nights a week.
  • Black participants reported the least amount of sleep at six hours and 14 minutes, while whites reported the most at six hours and 52 minutes.
  • The majority of all groups also said they typically watch TV before bed, and more than 20% of people in a co-habiting relationships said they are often too tired to have sex.
  • 14% of blacks reported being diagnosed with sleep apnea, while 10% of whites reported insomnia.
  • Twenty percent of the black and Hispanic participants said their sleep is often interrupted by money, employment and health concerns.

  1. Hey doll! I like this. Especially the part about us (black people) getting it in before going to sleep. I actually had sleep issues a while back and participated in a sleep study at Northwestern Hospital. I was taught yoga techniques. It worked like a charm. Oh and I do not have a television in my bedroom. Only bed, candles, dresser, reading chair, and music. As an overachiever type a person I had a hard time getting unwound at night. These little techniques really helped me rest. Occasionally I will use an herbal tea or herb remedy as soon as I reach home to help me unwind. The best thing to do is create a ritual for yourself that you do each night that lets your body know you are ready for sleep. Eliminate all sensory light and before you know it you’ll be sleeping in. I know longer use an alarm either. I allow my body to get the amount of rest it needs; I do not oversleep. I’m so good I tell myself when I want to wake up and I do. :) Good luck hon. Nighty night. lol
