Obama Kicks the “Middleman” Out
*GOOD NEWS FOR STUDENT LOAN BORROWERS*
Declaring himself an ally of American students in a fight against commercial banks, President Obama on Tuesday signed a new law designed to free up more money for higher education by ending the role of banks as “middlemen” in the college lending process.
The changes to the college loan business come as part of the final piece of the healthcare reform law, which Obama enacted in a signing ceremony at a community college in the Virginia suburbs of D.C.
Speaking to a crowd of students, Obama credited Democrats in Congress with tackling “a sweetheart deal in federal law” that guaranteed billions of dollars in profits for banks to offer college loans.
Money that should have been spent advancing the educational interests of students “instead was spent padding student lenders’ profits,” the president said. “It probably won’t surprise you to learn that the banks hired an army of lobbyists” to fight it.
“But I didn’t stand with the banks and the special interests,” Obama said of himself and the Democratic members of Congress who joined him at Northern Virginia Community College for the event. “We stood with you. We stood with America’s students.”
What About Obama’s Health?
All this talk about healthcare, but what about the President’s health? Is the pressure of getting this country out of a rut weighing down on his health? Fortunately, no. But is the cigarette smoking a by-product of dealing with this sizeable stress? Keep reading below for more details of Obama’s physical exam he had Sunday (2/28/10).
Washington (dpa) – President Barack Obama was judged Sunday to be in “excellent health” but still smokes too much and suffers from some knee pain, according to his first routine physical examination Sunday since becoming president.
Obama is “fit for duty,” White House physician Jeffrey Kuhlman declared after the traditional periodic presidential exam conducted at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, outside the nation’s capital.
Kuhlman urged Obama to continue his efforts to quit smoking and recommended “nicotine replacement therapy, self use” – which may have been music for First Lady Michelle’s ears after she has launched health initiatives like fighting childhood obesity.
At 48, Obama is known to make spontaneous lunchtime trips to local burger-and-fries establishments, but that practice has also apparently gotten him into trouble. His “bad” – or LDL – cholesterol, was 138, said Kuhlman, higher than the 130 he’d like to see.

Presidential Update: Obama Putting $3.4B Toward a ‘Smart’ Power Grid —> More Jobs!
Per Business Week
President Barack Obama, during a visit to a solar energy facility in Arcadia, Fla., is announcing Tuesday that he is making available $3.4 billion in government support for 100 projects aimed at modernizing the power grid. The projects include installing “smart” electric meters in homes, automating utility substations, and installing thousands of new digital transformers and grid sensors.
Officials have argued the a more modern grid is needed to give consumers better control over their electricity usage and costs, and to spur development of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.
The $3.4 billion in grants from the government’s economic stimulus program will be matched by $4.7 billion in private investments, the officials said. The smallest grant will be $400,000 and the largest $200 million.
Matt Rogers, the Energy Department official involved in the program, said the 100 projects were selected from 400 proposed. The money would be distributed over the next two months and the work is expected to be done over the next one to three years, he said.
“This will save or create tens of thousands of jobs,” said Jared Bernstein, chief economist and economic adviser to Vice President Joe Biden. He said the jobs will include equipment installers and electrical engineers as well as communications systems analysts and data entry clerks.
A $200 million grant will go to Energy Smart Florida, a program involving Florida Power & Light that plans to install 2.6 million smart meters in homes and advanced monitoring systems in the grid substations, said Browner.
“The impact of this will be felt throughout Florida,” she said.

Obama is obviously trying to improve our country by modernizing our power grid while creating more jobs at the same time. I think this is a wonderful idea and I’m happy and shocked to know that the $3.4 billion is being matched by private investments! The wealthy people play a vital role in our economy today. I hope more prosperous people will spread the wealth to help out the entire country
